Fallen

MimeSong Productions: Erk and Zabby
"We're not dead, we're just very quiet"

Started in October of 2005, Fallen is pretty old as far as still-going WIP games go. The demo version is pretty well known, as it has been used as the RRRB review standard (the bugs and flaws as well as secrets and minigames are pretty well known by now).

As many have guessed from Erk's signature, we have started working on Fallen in earnest again. At present, there are around 5 hours of gameplay. We are working towards a second demo, which will be around 10 hours long. At that stage, we probably won't release any more demos - just the finished version, which will be around 30-40 hours.

Please do not use any graphics from this thread in your own games without our permission. Most or all of them will be released publically in time, but for now, we are making them for Fallen and want them to stay a bit special for the game. If people start using our work, we will stop posting it.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v701/MimeSong/demos/80c5d1aa.gif[/IMG]Newte is a 16 year old orphan, and a sorceress. She is quiet and introspective, but not weak. After her mother died in childbirth, Newte was raised by Sigil's parents. Now that she is reaching the traditional age of sorcerous apprenticeship, she has set out from the little mining town of Ironwain to find her mother's trainer, retracing her mother's footsteps and trying to find out who and what she is.

Sigil is Newte's adoptive older brother. He has inherited a passion for metalwork and gadgetry from his father, and a firm and caring heart from his mother. He's brave and smart, and wants to help look out for his little sister.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v701/ ... attler.png[/IMG]Palimony is a spunky mercenary swordswoman. She's known Newte and Sigil since they were children, and won't pass up the opportunity to help out her old friends, and perhaps show off how she's changed since they were young together. (battler is outdated and will be revised)

Together, they are going to find Anaximander, a hermitous old sorceror who trained Newte's mother, Rhianne. If he can't train Newte, maybe he knows someone who can.
Don't read the following information if you have not played the existing Fallen demo (unless you want to ruin the ending, which we don't recommend).
With Newte in training, Sigil and Palimony must go their own ways, returning to the normal lives they left behind.

Newte finds that sorcery is more than energy channeling and making a decent stew. It's a complicated art, and learning it can be very dangerous.

Sigil begins the long walk back to Ironwain alone. Widderleaf forest is a dangerous place, and Sigil's bad sense of direction is only likely to make it worse...
With Fallen, we don't aim to break new ground in gameplay, or even graphics. Fallen is a story-oriented game, almost entirely; although we are not against having some original ideas, our goal is to tell the story of Fallen as best we can. The rest is just for flavour.

More forthcoming as mapping of new areas proceeds. We will not post too many of the old screenshots we've used a thousand times.

Demo
There is an old demo, but it contains bugs and the gameplay isn't very balanced. It seems silly to release the old demo when there are graphic updates to be made, and we have so much more story to tell! We may release an updated version of the first demo, but chances are by the time we have it ready, the second demo will be almost done too.

You can still download the RRRB edition of Fallen, but we're not putting it in the topic.

Glad you like them :) I am presently debating if I should post all the battlers I make, for feedback, or just a fair number of them. Bosses aren't going to get posted either way, but do people prefer being occasionally surprised by a new looking sprite?

Yay! It's back!

You're not going to post the old demo in this thread? Meh, it might be for the best.

Well, I'm already fairly familiar with everything here, so not much I can say that you don't already know.

Are you not going to add a shadow to the regular gust battler?

I might, or I might take it down and remake it into something later.

As for the demo, if we do put it back up I want to get the graphics, menu, and battle systems up to what the 2nd demo will have - animated heros and still frame enemies in a side view system, and a slightly customised menu system, as well as some play balance fixes we've worked out over the years. Chances are we will not have all that finished until the 2nd demo is almost ready to release, but we'll see.

I seen this game before but never tried it. It looks good though. Is the original still available? Or do you prefer people to wait for the new one.

Looks cool Erk, glad that you are working on it again.

If possible can you make the intro part (where you play as a kid) skippable for those of us who've already gone through it in the original Fallen?

I think your old save games will work with the new demo, if you still have them. If not, perhaps we can package it with a single savepoint starting just after the forest, taking you through the longer and more storyless part of the first game.

Since we're still working on art and story for the next bit, it's a tad early to worry about stuff like that though.

I have a suggestion. Although it's been a while since I've played the demo, a lasting memory I have of it is being annoyed by the encounter rate in the forest. Maybe my memory's exaggerating, but perhaps there should be an option (or item?) you can use to turn down the random encounter rate.

A great many aspects of the original demo have already been revised, improved, or just plain repaired :) there's not too much need to bring them to our attention anymore, that I can think of. Thanks though!
