Destiny's Death

http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/8282/signaturerr2.png[/IMG]

My game is called Destiny's Death and this is the topic about it.

I'll start out with talking about the plot. I don't want to make this too long, so I'll try and shorten it so it'll still make sense, but wont be to long:
Your adventure begins as a young man named Walton, whose asked to go to the neighboring city, Eram to get grocieries, for your family. After leaving your attacked by a monster, and wake up in a hospital. You then return to your original home, after a conversation with the nurse. You find your town
destroyed, and your mother dying. (this happens over 2 years, not 1 day) You then search for her murderer. While searching, you find this orb, and then eveyrthing around you changes.
You are then rescued by a man, and taken to a nearby town. After a quick talk, your asked to go back to the cave and find this orb. After searching for it, you find it, and once again, everything changes. This time as you leave the cave, you see two soldiers chasing a man. The soldiers think your an ally with the man, and are also arrested. You then wake up in jail, and are questioned. After a minute or so, the man that was arrested with you escapes, and your thrown back in jail. Later, the soldiers find out your not with the man, but they take you into a weapons room, and tell you that your going to be helping them fight a war. Your then sent into training, and this is where the real adventure begins.

That was a basic storyling of the demo I'll be posting later in this thread.

I'm also using Mr. Mo's ABS in this game, so I'll go ahead and put a list of important controls:
Controls:

Menu: Either, INSERT, or ESCAPE

Attack: S

Hotkeys: F + whatever number you want the hotkey to be.
EX: F + 2, press 2 to use the skill.
(I don't think you can use any hotkeys in this demo yet, unless you get to level 5, and you can only use Skills to hotkey, you cant hotkey weapons)

Turning HUD on and off: E
(You might want to do this during cutscenes, but you don't have to)

Dash: X

Sneak: Z

Heres a link to the demo:

If you want me to host it on a different site, tell me what site, and I'll go ahead and put it on there too.

Thank you for reading this, I hope you enjoy the demo, and will give me some feedback.
Also tell me if you think theres anything wrong with the storyline, like realism and things like that, because I'm not usually too good at that.

This looks pretty good, man, will try the demo later.

Good screens, though, I expect a lot from this game :D

btw, loving the HUD :P

Thanks!
I'm working on the training part right now. so once i finish this, i should be working on it a lot faster.
once you play the demo tell me what you think of it.

The demo I saw was quite good, but look into these two spoilers to find out how to improve.
Mapping was good, btw.
- The guy at the beginning enters the temple but the door is to the right of him...
- In the second town, lots of doors say Locked... but they are actually wide open.
- In the cave, after you speak with your mother, if you go to the northwesternmost cave doorway while inside the cave it still says 'I haven't found my mother yet' even after you've spoken to her.

- If possible, disable the HUD on the first few maps until you begin to control your player
- Add at least one box of text to your NPC's, some of them are empty.
- Encrypt your project next time
- If you haven't got one, put in an Antilag, the first town is real laggy
- Designate your map exit points better.
- That first town... when you went back and it was some kind of slave keeping zone... it looked nothing like the original. For one, there was water originally and none afterwards.
- I've never seen a sage like that say 'What an idiot'. Doesn't fit.
- Don't make the 'I am the murderer!' thing get you a gameover. Instead, make the guard run up to you, then you say something like 'You'll never take me alive!' and then they fight, and on loss it's game over.

Other than that, I enjoyed the game. I think this would go well if it had an MMO sequel.........

Thanks for playing it.

for the bugs:
1. I fixed the doorway, but I did it after I uploaded the demo, and I didn't want to re-upload it just for that.
2. I'll go ahead and make some more houses later today.
3. I completely forget I had that door there, i'll go ahead and fix that too.

for the imrpovements:
1. I've been trying to figure out how to disable the HUD, but whenever I do the call script it freezes the game. But if you want to turn it off yourself, you can just press E.
2. Yea, im not that good at making a lot of dialogue, but I'll get to work on that also.
3. I'll encrypt it next time too.
4. I had an antilag script, but whenever I used it with the ABS, it would get messed up a lot, so I had to take it out. I'm still looking for one right now, so if you know one that works (besides nearfantastica's, because his didn't work.) then give me a link to it.
5. I'll try and fix that for the next demo.
6. I've been planning on redoing that map, because it was one of the first ones I made for this game, I just haven't gotten around to it yet.
7. I'll change some of that also.
8. I'm not really sure what you mean about that part. Are you talking about the part where the soldiers are chasing the man, and then they also get you and put you in jail? If you tell me a little more about it, I'll go ahead and fix it.

and thanks for all the bugs and advice!

and if you still have the game, could you tell me how long it took you to play it? I'm trying to see how long this one was for most people, so i know when to release the next demo.

I'm using the HUD that came with Mr. Mo's ABS. and I looked through the 2 scripts, but they look a lot different.

I think I have an idea of how to turn it on and off though, so I'll try it later today and see if it works.

@Dark Ruby

I see what you meant by the murderer thing. I didn't even know I had that in there. But I fixed it now anyways.

Hmm... I was thinking too.

You know when you're in the hospital... that nurse's mood changes completely. If I were you, I'd try something like
'Please! You gotta let me go see my family' (or something)
Then the nurse says
'Okay go see your parents they live just...' (or something)

Try changing it to 'No! You can't see them, you're still sick!'
'But I have to!'
'You can't! Your final checkup is tomorow! If you pass it fine, you can go, but I can't just let you walk out of the hospital right now!'

Just a small tip, that's all...

Oh, and it took about 30 mins, but I only got up to the part where the soldier akss if it was YOU who did it. Then, I erm... said yes, and.......

Died.

*ahem*
As I forgot to save, I never managed to get further than that....

THat brings up a nice point, actually, maybe you should have savepoints in your game instead of the ABS... Just a hint, because if you save the game and you're in the middle of a battle, it's gonna open at you dying.

Or you could alternatively add a unique touch to your game by doing what I'm about to send you in a PM...

I'll try and make the nurses dialogue a little better.

I thought about doing savepoints, but I didn't really want to. personally I like saving whenever you want better, because, when im testing I can save as close as I want to the part that I'm trying to get to work. But if some more people say they want savepoints instead, then I might go ahead and add it.

The part you finished it, is probably only about halfway through the demo. The part in the cave at the door you tried to go through that said you can't because your havent seen your mom yet was the wrong door. Theres another door to the right of it, that your supposed to go through ;)

I got the PM, and if I do add save areas, then I'll definately do that.

Has anyone else played the demo, or have anymore comments?

and what do I need to do to get this moved up to the Project Discussion section?

EDIT:
There was a problem with the last demo, where you could only get about half-way through it. I've fixed the error, and reuploaded the demo. So if you had the version of the demo I had up earlier, re-download this one. It also has a few extra bugs fixed that were mentioned earlier in this thread.

@Dark Ruby:
of course you can be a betatester. Sorry for not saying it earlier, I didn't even see that part of you PM until just now lol.

An update on the game progress now:

Dark Ruby: I think I've fixed all of your bugs now, and also gotten an anti-lag script that works with the ABS now, and remade the slave town.

I've also gotten a lot farther in the game now, so I'm expecting another demo hopefully by the end of January, and at the end of Febuary at the latest. (As long as I keep working on it, and don't take another break)

and also, has anyone else played the demo?
I want to get some more comments, to try and find some things I can fix.

(As long as I keep working on it, and don't take another break)

Never miss breaks. Often, if you go making a game non-stop for a long time, you run out of all your ideas quickly

Dark Ruby's Advice! :D

Take breaks. Have at least one non-game-making day of each week. If you are going to do something on your game, simply sit down, think ideas through (e.g. Why something happened the way it did) and plan your next game move.

I usually do do that.
But sometimes I don't work on the game for about a month. but im trying to stop doing that now.

and is Dark Ruby the only person whos played this?
I'd like some more comments if other people have played it.

Ok, tried the demo.... here's my opinion put in two different ways...

Ok, were do I start with this, After starting the game I'm dropped off into some cave with no explanation of what is happening or anything so that was a little confusing, then after having done the whole orb thing and having been escorted out of the cave I couldn't find the route to the town for ages because the mapping ,especially that map, is really poor, it's only by total accident and trail and error that I found it at the bottom of the screen, and the town was seriously shoddy. There was one man there, who had nothing to say and a load of houses without doors... It was at this point that I gave up hope.

If you want this game to improve your going to have to put a lot of effort in. Maybe you got a little over excited at the thought of creating a demo, but try and make sure it's watertight before you do. Sorry man, just being honest. ':|

It's great keep it up!!

I'm not quite sure what part your talking about with the cave, but if you could tell me I'll get to work on it.

I don't see how it could've been that hard to find the exit on that map. I'll admit I do still need to block off some of the areas in that map, which may make it kinda confusing, but I have the water pretty much pointing to the exit on it.

I've been working on all the interior maps today and yesterday. I must've though I had made the maps for those houses but really hadn't.

The man you said says nothing, he's supposed to dissapear, and looking at the coding, it looks like I forgot to make him do that.

I'll add some more NPC's and animals and such later tonight.

and thanks for the comments and bugs!

Destiny's....Death...the name itself doesn't seem appealing to me. Maybe it's the word "Destiny"...hmmm I dunno.

At any rate. The HUD looks nice. The mapping...uh...yeah. Could use a bit more improvements on that one. Of course, no one starts off with perfect mapping skills. Just, keep on improving it.

Can't download the demo yet. My connection speed is damn crappy. Meh...

there just seemed to be no set path to the town, like, no road or anything

I understand that maybe you didn't want there to be a road but you still need to lead people by the hand a little bit to show them there's an entrance.

And what I was saying about the cave was that I was just placed straight in the room with the orb straight away without any explanation as to what I was doing there or anything, really even in a demo you should tell people what's happened or something before they start. ( i.e with an auto start event with pictures and text or something)

wait, you were placed right into the room with the orb?

You didn't even go to a town right after the intro?
Hold on, I'll look into that. I have no idea how that happened, because it didn't do that when I tested it.

EDIT:
Oh i see what happened. I must've been testing something, so I put the starting point there, and didn't change it back.
Hold on, I'll reupload the demo now.
