Welcome to HBGames, a leading amateur game development forum and Discord server. All are welcome, and amongst our ranks you will find experts in their field from all aspects of video game design and development.

Why this forum is dying?

it was a joke, and peri is one of the only straight-shootin admins we have left! you gotta have SOMEONE on board that isn't as corrupt as they are lazy.

also this thread is silly considering what is coming very soon ~

I disagree peri is always telling me to brush my teeth and get dressed and stuff I am tired of her strict reign of terror. If I want to set things on fire well gosh tootin darnit I should be able to. This is merica!

I have never seen perihelion ever really be unfairly strict.

I don't think there is anything wrong with this forum, honestly. I'm a rather new member, so we know that the forum pulls in new members. As for the game development thing. You can't really force people to make and complete games. Yeh you could get them to post a thread about the game they are working on, but maybe the reason they haven't posted a thread about it is cause they don't think they have enough to post about (*cough* me *cough*)

we could bring back the workshops (or was is called classrooms?). Help people help themselves. Problem is I think the people who usually lead discussions are tired of leading. Creating threads takes time and planning and being around to respond to them is a lot of responsibility. They also distract people from their own projects. Doing art and writing exercises are all good experience but they aren't any closer to completing their games. Unless the course was in sync with whatever they were working on.
Maybe that's what we should do. Create a weekly game development course. How to plan, write, design ect...
I like this idea, although it sounds like a lot of work. For it to work you'd have to have people who are willing to do it regularly.
I know I would get some use out of it.

This is a fairly unstructured post as I'm about to take dog for a walk xD
but I think maybe we should do something to spice this forum up a bit.
Or maybe the super secret thing that whoever is working on might be the right thing to spice the forum up.
All in all I just think this forum is fine, but maybe needs something to make it even a little bit better.

I don't feel like this forum is dead. However, there aren't that many active projects going on. But, you guys just returned from a 20 day long Sabbath, so whatever. HBG is like Jesus Christ, it keeps coming back from the dead.

I keep trying to revive my game but nobody's really interested.

We [hb] are working on something big but it's getting a little difficult to arrange everybody. But it should turn out ok.

If there's anything else we can please let us know and we'll get our arses in gear.

I think you should advertise it more, I don't think I've ever seen it advertised. D:

:O Is it the annual HB Conga line? Oh I hope its the Conga line! :3

It is but at this point getting from one end to the other lasts more than a year (we all got HUMUNGOUSLY fat) so we're gonna have to make it bi-annual.

Aw man. That means it'll take foooooorever. I think somewhere in the middle they decided to stop and party  . You need to organise your conga better HB. Seriously.

Make a dirty project and everybody will be interested. (massive killing, pussy, sex, drugs, alcohol etc.)

The problem with some project is that always is the same thing.

- A boring history, boring game party, save the world, save the world, save the world and then save the world.

Sarcasm!.

Actually this forum was dead for 22 days >_<, i almost erase the forum url from my favorite tab (but somebody says this forum is like jesus christ, always comes from dead)

I was planning to post my RPG MAKER ACE scrips here but seems nobody is interested in the new enguine

Awesome Bro

To be honest people don't seem interested in making games at all anymore, there are very few people making them... now we're more of a general life forum with a bit of gaming on the side, lol. But we're not dead!

I like this community and I'm a lurker. Granted it is quiet and not as active, the "active" game making communities out there are really just noisy with either elitism or kiddies trying to act like adults.

Naturally, this community would be a lot more alive if there are more contests, perhaps reviews and tips-tricks on game making from the community itself, things that other community websites usually do. However these are all pay-worthy effort. Gamespy and such pay for their content writers. HBGames is just held together by voluntary hobbyists who don't want to take game making so seriously that the fun is wiped away by the stress (re: Venetia's job as a designer if I'm not mistaken, and http://sharpsuits.net).

As always, if you want this community to be more active, play your part to contribute. I don't whine about inactivity because I know I'm in no place to do that.

I was thinking of posting up a contest for some resources for my game. I'm not sure how much the prize money should be though, since I'm a poor boy :P

Personally I think contests don't always have to reward real tangible things like money. The impress-Venetia contest rewarded indie games that not only get you games, but massive support to the indie developers as well. For smaller scale contests, we could always reward something silly like "I'll badly doodle you if you..." etc.

By saying that, I just reminded myself how some community forums have gamification integrated within. I recently joined a Chinese art forum where you can earn virtual currency, fame etc to unlock graphic resources made by the community and what not. HBGames can consider doing something like that too, although it might take some massive changes to the forum itself.

I know that contests don't have to have rewards, and I won't have rewards for some of the contests, however if I'm holding a contest for something like "A huge spider" then I think I should pay atleast something. I would doodle funny things for people but I can't draw. Haha!

Gamification is a system I ablsolutly love. I think perhaps something like "Forum achievments" and things like that could work. The problem with things like forum credits is that it renders free resources useless because you'd still have to "pay" for them using forum credits. Perhaps "Forum points" could work. When you have a certain amount of points, you can access different parts of the forum. this would be good for private forums too.
But yes.
GAMIFICATION! WOOT WOOT! <3

I take it you're suggesting something here?

The game will take pace in australia!
Naw, but like, I'll be having a huge spider latched to a tree (or that's what I'm hoping) so I'll have to par someone to sprite that, cause I'm sure that won't be an easy thing to sprite...
