Why do we make RMXP games?

I don't make games as much as I make resources for them. I've started a few projects on my own but creating stuff for myself isn't as much fun as making it for some one else.
I suppose by starting a project thread it would change from a game for myself to a game for everybody. But then I'd rush to finish it.  Haste makes waste.

This is the same kind of thing I do. I might start something, but I never finish it if it seems like nobody will get anything out of it. That's why I'm teaching myself RGSS (And Ruby, as an extension) That way, I can make scripts that other people can use, or at least that they could say that its a good idea. I don't like making things for myself. If I want to do something for myself, then I play an online game. (Not one of the subscription services like WoW, I play nexon games, like Mabinogi. Go figure.)

I intend on getting into Game Design, and have been creating games for about six years or so now, it's not a dream for me it's a plausible reality that I intend on accomplishing, and the best way to get ahead of the game is to work on your skills beforehand. I have a message with my story, they have purposes, I'm trying to get something done with combat, video games are an art form, and in a game you can write an amazing story, work on amazing art, and create amazing music all on your own- and that's something. It's not just it's own art form- it's a combination of several art forms melded together and fleshed out by the enjoyment of a mental challenge- the gameplay.

Games are mentally challenging when done right- fighters for example are mindgames that are all about prediction- right up there with chess. It's not a mere hobby for me, it's what I intend on doing now and for the rest of my life probably.

I dunno. It's the only way of making ideas I come up with into an actual game right now. And If I just keep it to myself, what's the point? 'sides, If I release it, I'll get some decent critisism for it, won't I?

That only depends on how good the game is doesn't it? :P

The idea is to get experienced with creating games, not necessarily to gloat about how you've made them. Chances are, most people there have made games.

However, if you can make a game and make it very very popular, that DOES say something, and if you can make a game and show a deeper level of thought when it comes to the design, that ALSO says something, because experience can be much more useful to getting into a great university than grades or a fancy SAT score, and doing very well when it comes to what you have created makes you a better candidate than someone who doesn't know what they're doing. It's all about how well you handle it really.

Right, but let's be careful, while it does not hurt to make games or anything useful while you are at high school, university (and every other programs) has different standards, methods, things to learn. For example, if our standard were how good your game would sell, things such as "the 8 crystal quests" would not be quite as bad as it is now (I have Eragon & Amos Daragon in mind when I say that).

Because it's mine, and if I make something that other people enjoy, and maybe if it puts a smile on their face, it'll mean I've done something to be proud of.

Oh and the chicks dig it. Seriously.

Of course there is a difference in standards, which is why you have to get GOOD at using RPG Maker, or any program. You write a good story and you're a writer, having good art makes you a good artist, having great music just makes you a good musician, the game itself has to play well, and have the great writing, art, AND music, as well as the programming to make it work.

If you want to really be a good designer, you have to know games well and what works and what doesn't, as such the competitive crowd is usually best suited to this kind of thing. If it's a mere hobby and you don't take it very seriously and plan a LOT, you will never meet university standards.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't it be more impressive to have XML or other 3D engine projects? I mean, I highly doubt a lot of companies will have use for a RGSS scripter, or even someone who really knows how to work RMXP.
Anyway, I make games purely for fun.

It really depends on what you plan to specialize in.  If you're trying to get a job scripting games, then you're certainly correct.  If you're trying to become an artist for a game, then you're right.  But if you want to work on the story, like me, then RPG Maker is ideal because it lets me focus on that.  I don't have to worry about scripting, graphics, or music and I can concentrate on the story.  Of course, you need to do a little of everything to make a good game, but it's more focused toward people who want to write the stories for video games.

I don't do a lot of RMXP related things now other than recolours but back in the day my inspiration was the community that I was in, and the environment.  Plus it was fun - although I get bored quickly and thus a lot of my projects didn't reach completion. :/
