SMF is not an option really, as Shadow himself has said. So vote for phpBB3 instead.

However, the number of features that SMF offers is pretty limited, and modifying it is difficult and time consuming. We're also finding that SMF is not performing well under this website's heavy load.

I love IPB forums.  They are compatable with so many things that would actually be useful to the community.  The setup is very simple, and it's a very smooth process adding in features.
