What is the future of Gaming?

I find myself nowadays playing more indie games than commercial ones, because I can't afford the silly prices of new games (and by the time they become affordable, nobody else is playing them). Maybe this could influence the future, who knows.

before 2004, we were still controlling games using simple controllers on handhelds, with A's and B's, and the D-pads. Then Nintendo took a great leap forward with the Nintendo DS, bringing you even further into the game with more user activity, and focus on NUI; same goes with the Wii, where they brought a new dimension to gaming by bringing the player's movements into the game. Microsoft taking the next step already, with Project NATAL, letting the player control the game with their entire body. What's next is a very difficult question. Most just immediately say Virtual Reality helmets, which is true - that seems to be the next leap in gaming. I myself think they need to work in NUI even more, and polish up what they've already started.

Okay this mention of FFXIII is a bit annoying. How exactly is FFXIII the future of gaming? It is basically a standard j-RPG with pretty graphics. It is not even the first game with pretty graphics - plenty of games have been released on the PC, 360, and PS3 with equal or better graphics. It's not the first linear RPG. It's not the first RPG that keeps a common experience among the party (hello, Mass Effect? Dragon Age?).

I hate to say it but many of the "innovations" that FFXIII supposedly has have already been done by other games, both gameplay, graphics, and story-wise. Even the developers behind FFXIII admitted that they were inspired by games like Call of Duty Modern Warfare when it came to how to design their game.

And let's not forget that the next FF game will be nothing like XIII. So Square Enix isn't even following its own supposed innovation.

I agree with what others have said in that the future is basically going towards immersive technologies, such as Project NATAL, virtual reality in general, real 3D, etc.

Final Fantasy never strikes me as a trend setter, although it does tend to use the best available at the time. Though that's more the utmost present than the future of gaming.

Awesome Bro

There's something I don't get when people talk about Project Natal:

Firstly, everyone says it's unique and magical etc. that it's a breakthrough in technology, yet if I remember right, about 5-6 years ago, didn't we have tge EyeToy from Playstation? And even before that, there was something else but I forgot what it was called. All Natal is doing is refining the idea of it, not creating something completely new, and besides, we haven't had chance to play it yet, so for all we know it could just be a gimmick that doesn't take off.

I think the future of gaming lies within digital distribution, it makes it easier for the creators to hand it out, and cuts out the middle man, meaning they'll make more money from the sales, which could reflect upon the future of game prices, if they're making enough, they'll surely share some of the savings with the customers as an incentive to buy the rest of their games, I mean heck, who DOESN'T like great games at affordable prices?

However, I can see a problem with digital distribution, this being that, well, not everyone will be able to do it, we still have people with 56kb modems, who struggle to download one song from iTunes, let alone these games that range from 4GB to who knows what... (MGS4 was 48GB...), so this, I think, would put off digital distribution until the standard internet speed has been increased, and 56kb no longer exists (We know they'll get rid of it, I mean seriously...)

That does also mean we'll be seeing less video game stores around, except those selling old games. (There's some cool ones around here that only sell N64 and below heh)

Games in real life:
Say, you get 100 points for walking to work, 20 for running on the treadmill for a half an hour, 150 points for recycling, etc. Gaming could actually help you improve your lifestyle, certain skills, and even the environment. Already, there's a car with a little plant inside of it, that grows as you save gas. These sort of things are what I'm talking about. If you had a virtual pet withing your car, a whole 'nother dimension is added to your lifestyle, as you strive to do better in everything you do, to achieve points towards a goal, or for items and such in a video game.
Think Pokewalker: a small pedometer that came with the latest pokemon games, Heartgold and Soulsilver. With every step you take, you add to your step count, which factors the amount of Watts you earn at the end of the day. Your pokemon level up, and your watts count towards a new place to walk through, and you can even use your watts to play mini games, find items, and catch pokemon.

That's the future of gaming.
