I just stuck that picture in there as a placeholder anyway. I was kind of thinking of using whatever I decide to use with my intro screen as the backdrop on the menu too. I didn't feel like drawing it now, so I just slapped on some existing art for the time being. n_n
Edit: Hmm took out the background... and I'm thinking that if there's going to be a 4-character party, most of the time, it'll look better with a plain background.
Oh thank god, a promising topic finally shows it's face in 'Early Projects'. The art is really well done, firstly, but if you're studying art, I bet that you were already well aware of your own abilities. I generally like the story, although modern settings are not quite my thing with few exceptions, this seems like it could be one of them. You seem to have a connection with your characters, and that's always good. I'm really looking forward to seeing this develop.
Ok, its about time for a rant... First things, first though. Tehrin, your project has put alot of the rest of our projects to the backburner, and even to shame, but I have to say, it seems like you've put quite abit of thought into this. Its highly original, and you don't seem like your aiming for too much ( I could be wrong ). I would like to know what sprites your using for this game though, if thats not a problem. Now for my rant.
Is it fair for people to go around saying that RMXP has been suffering from a lack of creative abilities lately? I mean, come on, everybody does not have the same creative potential as others. Yes, there are people out there, who rush their projects out, with no thoughts, barely any plot and Sure as HELL no spelling gifts, but How dare you, HOW DARE YOU tell us we have no creative abilities. So there theres my rant. PEACE! :D
Jakey, thank you! Well, as I originally stated, I wrote this as a comic. Both the comic and RPG world suffer from an overabundance of fantasy stories. So... this was my attempt to try and do something a little different.
Clizzz, Oh, I'm aiming for a good deal. There's a LOT to the story that I'm not revealing here, but what I wrote is sort of like a teaser for what I have in mind.
I agree though, with your rant. Not everyone has the same potential, or even knowledge/education when it comes to things. Some people are out to make games (or comics) for the fun of it. Other people get into things like this, because they realize what a good storytelling potential (and even a sounding board too) games have. It's even the same way in the world of professionally-made games. You have games like, say... some of the puzzle games that are out there. Then you have games like Xenosaga that have long/complex storylines that really make you question the world we live in (sucks that they had to shorten it due to lack of interest). But either way, both parties enjoy the process of making the game, and feel a sense of accomplishment when it's done, or even when they finish certain parts.
Needless to say, with programs like this, you're going to have a lot of younger kids coming in to experiment with making games because they really like playing them.
My first game attempt was in 2002 using the default sprites and tilesets and there was no story, but it had a lot of random silliness that my IRL friends enjoyed playing. And there's really nothing wrong with that.
But also, I can understand the desire to see well-thought out projects that have potential to be something really great.
With that said, I'm in the middle of writing out my story in a game script mode. :D

How dare us! To be honest, I don't think anyone would say that about people if they showed they had creative ability.
If all you can show us is a page with scattered text and random typos, well, I don't think we have much to say positive-wise to that. Human beings naturally judge.
Hey, I dislike scattered, Random, I-Just-Threw-This-Together-Spur-of-the-Moment, just as much as the next guy, but I think it is unfair to label, those of us who took our time to plan our projects, Lazy Bastards. Sorry, but that just comes off as StereoTypical.

I like how you tried to make yourself seem wise there for a second, it almost worked. What I said though, was that it's one of the first good topics composed in 'Early Projects' in awhile, and I don't think anyone really has the right to deny that. A lot of the projects are OK, don't get me wrong, but lately this forum has been flooded with a bunch of spam topics on extremely rough ideas for games, and that's me putting it nicely. I didn't say anybody wasn't creative, so you might want to trash your rant.
Well, actually, it seems, that a larger amount of people are starting to move over to more modern games, because, most usually, now these days, Mid-Evil/Fantasy/Middle Earth RPG stories have been pretty much exhausted. So, no your story doesn't sound cliche to me. Oh, and BTW I like your ... um .. er ... picture ... ( Not that I'm saying anything, You are like 10 Years my senior, but ... ) O_o
Edit: Jakey@ Um, Ok and I agree, she does have ONE of the best Projects right now. ( Notice That I said One of the best, so as not to aggravate others, such as Saikyo, with that wicked Weapon System ... ) AND I did not say that you said that we lacked creative abilites, Some of the others MIGHT HAVE eluded to it ...
Not really, I see the same amount of games with modern settings that I did in the RM2K-3 era. Modern settings are being exhausted in games anyways, outside of our genre, but still.
Oh, sorry, forgive my ignorance, I didn't know you were around that long ... Anywho, If you say so ... then I guess I have no choice, but to believe you, O Aged One. :D
Just thought I would make a post here, rarely see a game that is of any interest to me. Looks good, hope to see a demo or completed game sometime in the future.
Okay, I've decided that I'm going to be using the HalfKaizer sprite templates for my game. I'm not really too good at templating myself, but I like the vast amount of poses and body types available. I've already started on a few of the sprites.
I did want to use Geredreth Advance sprites for this, but I think in the end, I'm going to go with these ones.
I realize if I use these, I will probably have to come up with completely original tilesets as well, since the defaults don't seem to fit. (Which is fine... I can use more practice with pixeling. XD)
Areas Needed Sofar: (as referenced in the script)
- City
- Desert/wasteland (with few plants)
- School (nothing too complex, because it'll only be used in a short sequence)
- Modern apartment/shop interior
- Old Subway
So anyway, with the first chapter of the script put together, I think I can really start working on graphics. For a demo, I would like to have at least three chapters coded. The first chapter takes up two chapters of the comic version. So I'm thinking two or three chapters would be good for a demo version.
Scripting-wise, I'm thinking about the in-game database/encyclopedia and how that's going to work. (From my limited knowledge of ruby anyway.) Since there's so much stuff in the game to keep track of, I think it might be a good idea to have it.
I'm also considering the possibility of animated cinematic type scenes. I technically can do it, but I obviously can't animate a whole scene. So I'm thinking there will be parts that are animated a few frames and others that are just still pictures. Right now though, I'm just making progress with the animated title screen.
Oh, here's some art that I *might* be using in the menu. But in my opinion, it's too painted/realistic when the other graphics are going to be in a more cell-shaded style.
He looks so...real. Absolutely astonishing artwork, tehrin. Although he does look more 'realistic', I think it would go good with the menu...as long as everything in it isn't too 'pixellated'. If thats the case, I think it would probably be better to leave that one out. It would like great for like an instruction book though! :P
Good luck with the pixelling aspect of your game! Half-Kaizers are very good templates to work with, no doubt.
If you need a great composer for the soundtrack, try contacting Edgen. If he isn't too busy scoring independent films, he might be able to help you. I'm sure he wouldn't do it for free though.
If you want a substantially cheaper composer (who will probably do it for free), try someof theseguys.
Oooh thank you for the suggestions! I probably can't afford anything too expensive right now. I'll probably have to get music from a few different people, as there's a lot that I want, but I don't want one person to do all the work. T___T That is unless I magically earn enough money to commission someone out the butt for lots and lots of music. D:
And this was just done to test the battlers... but I think I'm going to use more of an action pose for that. But I can use the script that has various pictures for different actions, and I could use this for an idle pose?
