The potential of RMXP

IT has Z-axis, but not the way it is in the 3d game... it is used to display picture above or below, depending how high you set it, if I not wrong..

Howdy,

RMXP potential is relative, for example RGSS can interact with the OS through Win32 API thus interact with some C source I have that controls my microwave through a custom PCB interfaced to its internal electrics. I mean that’s fun an all but what’s the point. Because of the limits on the editor the product suffers as a whole. The GUI editor goes right out the window and therefore so dose usability of many extensions. So RMXP potential is a fine balancing act between usability and expandability.

Take Care,
Near

I think a proffessional game can be made via rmxp.
If Square-Enix would be making a remake of the final fantasy classics for the PC and they would be lazy, they would be using RPG-Maker ;)
that's potential!

I didnt read the topics between pages 2 and 3 but heres my Opinion\Input.

Durastik what you have stated in the #10th post of page 1 is incorrect; You are able to use 3D Within rpg maker xp. Im confident you cannot use the Game.exe window, However.. If OpenGL was to open an additional window into fullscreen or w\e it is possible.

DLL's and engine's can be used with RMXP very consistently.. If it wasnt for RGSS's Limitations we could exceed beyond 2d quite easily.

If EB were to make a better rpg maker with easier 3d capibilities, it propbably wouldn't be sold in america (just like RM2k3). But if some one could pull off 3d graphics on the rmxp, first of all would the color be alright and also would there be a major lag on the game due to having to load such a large file of the model? and if some one magicly pulled this off, could they use any kind of 3d file (like .MDX or .MDL or .OBJ or also milkshape) or would there be limitations to that also?

I completely and totaly agree with you. I would rather play an original 2D game than a new age 3D game. 3D gets boring after so long, 2D never dies out. 2D FOREVER!

Hey there.
Let's try and lay this topic to rest. Rmxp- for what it is has limitless possibilities. For what it is. You want to make a old school style Rpg, and inmy humble opinion I think they are the best, Rmxp is perfect. With that being said lets drop the 3d talk. Rmxp was NOT made to create 3d games. It was made to create old school Rpg's. And if we all keep that in mind then we can say when doing what it was designed to do Rmxp's potential is near limitless.

It would be good as you can make them. Loading them won't be the problem i think. And no you can't use other3D files, its possible tho.

Modeling thru code is hard.

And yes RMXP wasn't made for 3D we all know. Its good for old style RPGs, even for ORPGs.

In your face!
Hehe, j/k

Nod's with Sharktooth XD.

Yes i like 2d RPG's i even stated that in a post earlier(in another forum).

Just expressing what my thoughts were on 3d; but yer... Enterbrain could've made the allowance of 3D but they choose to make it 2D so lets just make the most of it ;).

It doesn't have near limitless possibilities for 2D games. The lack of pixel movement and effective instance detection is probably the biggest barrier that keeps RMXP from being nothing more than an RPG MAKER (which is *gasp* what it was designed for). RMXP also doesn't pre-load objects (they're created on the fly when they're available on a map) and this slows down the program when a large number of objects are present.

It can make plenty of other style games, but certain games like side-scrollers are near impossible to EFFECTIVELY.

You're not very observant. There is a pixel movement script and a motion sensor script. It must be from hanging out with those 2k3 cavemen so often.

Oh yeah just make a loading event on your map!

What ryan said. Sidescrollers are pretty easy to do with a little bit of script editing. I'd guess an hour's work + a pixel move/obstruct script - I think a few people already made sidescroller scripts anyways. Though I wouldn't recommend it if you already have another program that does them well out of the box, if it's easier to learn than using those (GameMaker hurt my head)

Top-down shooter took me 3 I think. That was also with several types of AI, powerups & some cool fluff stuff.
