Sprites based on EarthBound. Criticize them!

Sorry if it's in the wrong section. Gettin' used to these new subforums.

These are sprites of the three main characters that are going to be in my continuation of the Mother series. They're using EarthBound's style - so I need to know if there is anything I should improve in my work. Please comment.

At that size and level of detail, the only thing that distinguishes them is color, really. Distinctive personal touches like baseball caps or glasses help that out a lot.

i like how they all have hair over one eye. they're such unique people. also why is the middle kid's shirt gradient shaded? there's lots more wrong with them but idk sprites so

Well the plot is about emo kids, so it's going to have stereotypes in it. But whatever. I put the gradients in, because later, I'm revamping most of the graphics. Thanks anyway for the input.

You need more contrast on the last guy. The shading on the hair makes no sense at all. Is the first sprite a girl or a guy? I think you should look at the Mother sprites and try to get a feel of how they do it.

Well you've made a BIG mistake by flipping them to make life easier, check the middle guy out for example, if you look at his walking down, his fringe magically changes eye !, and on the sideview, one of them (I assume walking right) should have hair covering over the eye, which clearly says you copied and flipped that too, the same goes with the walking up sprite.

While spriting, you should never copy and flip to save time unless your character is exactly identical on both sides.

Well, in this case, jbrist, it's nessecary. In the game "EarthBound", the characters in the game flip as well.

I've never actually played Earthbound to be honest with you, but if the sprites are flipped in that too, to make life easier, then the developers are lazy asses, and it makes the game look sloppy when people notice it.

It's not "nessecary", (Which by the way is spelt necessary.) you don't have to completely copy of EarthBound (Don't know much about the game though.). If you are going to copy every detail, people should just go and play EarthBound. Make the sprites into your on way. Make them more detailed, bigger, but still simple. Just have some imagination.

I suggest more gloss and shine on the hair and clothing as well as a softer color for the face so that it is still distinguishable, but not so rough and obvious. =3

Also, perhaps remove the noses like on the third sprite.

I can see some blush in there when I zoom in. You should probably nix those details unless they're large sprites where you have the room to do such things and blend them in nicely.

The tin on the red haired boy (number two) isoff. His shirt has tint for the sun at one side when he's stepping right, and the other side when he's stepping left.

The front and back vieews are all missing a standing pose; you have them stuck in mid step.
