Farah and Twin Matrix you are officially warned for flaming in this topic.  Seriously of all things to get angry over...

Stay on topic and off each other, folks.

I think the reason for the heros to be on the right is becuase the logical and the most common light source for almost all drawings and games is always from the upper left corner, thus, if the hero was the the left, the light would be shining on the back of their heads and their faces would be shadowed.

For that reason, heros are on the right so their faces are in the light.

but also, if you think about side scrollers, the hero is always on the left going to the right, so in that case, my theory is completely destroyed.

More or less then, it's probably just preference and since the first people has gotten used to it.

actually, now that I think about it, almost any game that is side view and action based, the hero starts on the left, as opposed to turn based, the hero starts on the right O_O

i.e. The Tales Of games, the hero always starts on the left except for a few old versions where they could also be surrounded on both sides at times.

As well as every side scroller out there, as opposed to 2k3 or final fantasy or any other rpg thats turn based but is side view.

useless random brain food.

I say both, depending on the game, and I'm going to bring up some really out-of-the-blue points to support both sides. This is just something I learned in a class, so it's probably not even applicable here. XD

With the heroes on the left, they automatically have to face right. Because when we read in English, we read from left to right, which makes it seem like anything facing to the right seems to have an 'easier' time doing so. The same principle applies when loading up a graphic. If the left side isn't just a little heavier in color/graphics/whatever, we tend to see it as being unbalanced. We also see the left side first because that's the side we read from.

Heroes on the right side of the screen do just the opposite and our minds are tricked into thinking that there's some opposition, even if the random encounter is a rabid bunny.

Out of the two, I prefer left. I think that a lot of RPGs have the heroes on the right because a lot of big, commercial RPGs come from Japan, where they read from right to left.

This made a lot more sense in my head, sorry. ._.'

My personal preference would be scattered around the battlefield, and constantly moving, like  the way Wild Arms 3 did it. Although that was 3D. Chrono Trigger and Grandia (the original) sort of incorporated movement into an otherwise sideview system.

If you have to only pick one, hmm, personally, I'd go with the heroes on the left. Left to right mentality. And it's different to the majority of "right to left" battle systems.

I think it'd be interesting to see a system w/ the heroes at the bottom...

I was actually planning a system like that for my next game.

I too would like to see a sideview battle system with the heroes on the bottom and monsters on top.

Does it really matter? Its the same however you look at it. Heroes On The Right = Heroes On The Left × Upside Down. What about situation where you have Heroes On The Right And The Left Simultaneously? I know in FF there's many games where monsters approach you from multiple sides. Then, the screen fades into battle and alas! The monsters have suddenly teleported to the same side! Now why can't we just teleport like that to dodge attacks or escape from battle...

the debate is really just about which you prefer though :\

preference doesn't really have to make matter to anyone but yourself, lol, in your case your just indifferent, but I guess it's not really a important issue, lol.
