Playing Japanese RM games

Playing Japanese RM games
If you've been around rpg maker resource sites you're bound to come across something in Japanese. You might find a RM game in Japanese that you'd like to see in action, even if you can't read a lick of Japanese. But once you download it and try playing it you get error messages and it flat out doesn't work.

First of all. You need to download language support so that your computer can display Japanese characters if it can't already. It's not completely necessary, but without it you'll just be seeing a bunch of empty square box characters. I'll have to leave that part for you to figure out. Every system is different. For windows 7 it involved going into windows update and installing the east asia language support package.

What's the Problem?
Now the game might start up at first. But it's very likely you'll run into 'file not found' messages for either audio or graphic files and the game will just crash.

The filenames don't match up. Even with the proper language support, when extracting files from the exe or a zip file the file names aren't encoded like they should be. You could manually rename the files but I don't recommend it. Plus you might not be able to access some files if the project folder is encrypted.

Here's what you can do.
Download the AppLocale utility. Install it. When you run it you want to select either the .exe that extracts the game folder -Or- if it's a zip folder you're going select whatever program you normally use for that like Winrar or 7-zip. Select Japanese for the language; and go.

Clarification- not the game.exe that runs the game but the .exe that the game is packaged in. If everything is in a zip folder you need to run winrar or whatever with applocale and then extract the folder. Also sometimes the exe will also be in a zip folder. It might be best to use applocale first to extract the exe and then applocale on the exe itself when extracting the game files.

Running on applocale, the files will be extracted with the proper encoding and the file names will match up with what the game thinks they should be.

Once you get to this point everything should be PEACHY KEEN and you can finally try out the game. If you get anymore missing file errors the fault might be with the game's creator for not including them. Or you might need to download the RTP.
