Official Contest! A New Beginning!

If you guys don't want to worry about copyrighted music you could always go to www.freeplaymusic.com, though I'm a personal fan of vgmusic.

Anyway freeplay's stuff really isn't incredible, but it's free :P And a little FYI I'm not advertising, it's just a helpful link.

2. How do you compress your .exe files to .rar or .zip?

For .rar, you need to download Winrar first. Then right-click the .exe file, and there'll be a choice called Compress into .Rar file or something.

Yay for contests! :D And especially this one, considering the prize but of course the new beginning of RMXP (I don't know, I like Vbulletin, but Simple Machines is very "simple" and nice XD), but one question (Kill me because I am asking questions whoop-de-doo)

1. Will one get frowned upon for using predictable resources or character sets and such, like say the RTP and that kind of thing?

That's pretty much it. Thanks for reading. :P

I HAVE RETURNED!!!! MWAHAHAHAHAHAA
Actually like the sound of this comp, me an' ma bud Malachi are currently plannin' like CRAZY for our entry, and it all seems to be coming naturally to us, which is nice.
We have set on a basic story and characters and are currently expanding our ideas and developing our story and background of the world in which its set..

Ok Ima post up a brief bit of what we got, dont laugh! XD

in the ancient times, there was not magic or anything like that, until five children were born. The children bore mysterious symbols on their pale, almost bluish skin. As these children got older, the symbols began to expand through out their body until they were visable on their skin. It was at that time that they began to show signs of casting strange words that would make impossible things happen. They were named gods, and thus did the Genesis religion begin.

As they began to mature more and more, they disovered that they too were mortal and would eventually die, so they took it upon themselves to call five strong minded youths and teach them what there was to teach. It happened gradually, but eventually their skin began to become a pale blue, and they too began to have symbols showing on their skin. It was at that time that they "Ascended"
Shortly after their students had ascended, it was decided to build a city on an area of forested land. Near its completion, one student in particular showed a grand amount of potential. His name ????????. Unfortunately...he was not as pure as they had thought. On the night of the city's completion he snuck into his mastered quarters and slashed his throat, and then proceeded to absorb his powers, and his runes(the markings on their bodies)
He remained among the ascended, never suspected of commiting the crime..that is until he tried to kill the wrong High Sage...

he was trying to become more powerful than the others so he would be "Deified" to the highest level of Paradise, but he was locked away in the lowest levels of paradise by the surviving sages, and the other students. The original sages then ascended themselves to Paradise leaving the students in charge of the safety of the world, but not before creating a race of magi, that they named the Nostalai, immortal beings made of magic, however they weren't so immortal. They were able to be killed, and if they strayed too far from the city they would die. The new high magi, then proceeded to expel all Terrans from the city, and encrusted the city deep within a large of group of mountains(created by magical means.) This area was not passable by Terrans, or anything created by them. It was later called "The Nether" an area thriving in magical energy. 2750 years later, a Terran army from the north invaded a Nostgalai village that lay just beyond the Nether. They forced them to tell them the secrets of magic. Those that resisted died, and those that spoke the secrets were taken back to the terran city, and tortured, and beaten like they were no better than animals.

150 years after that, a war raged between the Northern and Southern hemispheres. The north, being more technologically advanced than the south, used their magic powered cannons and airships, came out victorious leaving the south a barren, and inhospitable wasteland which is later known as the wastes.

you play a respected captain in the Brahman army(the most powerful country in the north) who discovers that he's fighting for the wrong side, and so he leaves the North and moves to the destroyed southern city of Nadaaros.

YAY!
I feel like i never dissapeared! :p

So far, I only have the intro done for mine, but I have all break off with no homework or anything like that, so I'm hoping to crackdown. Luckily, I'm pretty much all set for scripts.

Whew.  I've already got a good start, after like two weeks of non-stop work.

I have a feeling there won't be that many entries, really.  Cause the press for time, I dont think people have the guts to stop their projects for this contest, because the only way to make a long game in two months is with non-stop work on the game.

And, with that, I take my leave.  I need to keep working.  I hope to exceed the four hour goal actually.  Hopefully that impresses the judges.

Oh, and a quick question: who are the judges gonna be?  PLEASE dont make Luminier a judge.  XD

Oh damn, people have started already!
I was gonna start a little after Christmas, well my current project should be finished by Sunday. (and uploaded so you all better play it ;) )

The general standard for making a game is one hours work per one minute of gameplay. Considering this is supposed to be 4 hours (60*4=240) that's 240 hours of work (10 days straight non-stop) by a single person to produce a 4 hour game. It's not actually as unreasonable as it seems.

Mind you, that doesn't count all the graphics/music that are practically a necessity to make your game original. You may argue, but most RTP games will be scoffed at, compared to those with custom graphics and all the rest.

When you put it that way though, it makes me feel better about making games.

This sounds great, but a few questions that weren't explained well by the rules-
-Must all resources(particualarly music) be original?
-You say no fangames/characters. Are we allowed to use vgmusic?(kinda ties in with first
-Is the RTp allowed?
-Are battles neccessary?
-can we use scripts made by others?
-how do we sign up?

Game rips (music or graphical) are fine as long as they're used well.

of course

I dont see a problem why they should be necessary on the game....

....but think that battles are part of the gampley system, it can be an excuse to give experience, shows that the characters skills are growing, as they can take on bigger enemys later on.... and keeps the player entertained in the progress of the story...... not that the story shouldnt be entertaining as well....
if you have an alternative to battles or they dont fit in your game genre....
I dont see a problem why they should be necessary on the game.... (quoted myself  :P)

as long has credit is given.... to the script maker

Actually it does. The 1hr per 1minute rules includes all the material development, brainstorming, concept finalization, and such. The actual making the game work doesn't take that long.

Yeah, because I was going to say that once all the mapping, graphics, database, e.t.c. is done, eventing hardly takes any time.

Remember though, it doesn't have to be 4 hours long. I doubt you'll get penalized if your game is 3 hours and 55 minutes or even just 3 hours. As long as its a solid game - you know, beginning-middle-end.

I'm mainly using the RTP, albeit edited to go better with Inq's tilesets, so the graphics aren't much of a problem for me. You shouldn't be too bored with the graphics, though, as a majority of them are recolors. Unfortunetly, by artistic abilities are pretty much limited to that.

You guys are fast, I just finished Brainstorming Section and still looking for the right graphics O.o;

Hey, the more time you put into the game the better it will come out, right?

Ah, so true :)
I guess It isn't all a disadvantage after all ^^;
