Number of Main Characters?

My projects differ greatly with atmospheres and play styles, so the game characters differ greatly to reflect that.

Project #1: This is going for an epic yet 'warm' (couldn't explain it better ':| ) feeling that is similar to Chrono Cross. Massive cities, unique and varying characters, and split story paths. This game's characters are in their dozens and although some have more emphasis than others (the main character will not be overtaken or anything like that), I'm trying to make it so that they all play individual roles (which is difficult already with just a few of the characters designed).

Project #2: This project is more active and personal with a deep fantasy-based atmosphere similar to... let's say Final Fantasy IX. The game is action-packed at times and then slows down with calm and cultural locations. For a more personal game like this I decided to go for a party-based game where the experience is spread out through a party (like FF). This game has around 5/6 characters (not finalized yet), giving me the ability to design each carefully and make their skill branches support each other and be unique.

The number of characters you have just depends on the experience you're going for, all that you need is to do the designing right. Smaller numbers tend to go for the more 'hands-on' and dramatic experiences while larger numbers tend to go for the more epic and active experiences. And that is why so many choose a game of around 8 characters. 8 characters allow just the right amount of variety and let the developer's create unique personalities for each.

If i made a game, i would have 4-5 main characters in it. Because it's annoying to level up others and it would all get too complicated. Four characters is usually enough, it's easier that way too, cause the battle system suits best for four battlers.

The party change script I'm using gives non-party characters 50% of the EXP that those in the party get. That way, the rest stay close in levels to the main party, but not so much that it's a cheap way of levelling up.
Besides, you can rewrite the battle system for more characters if you please, and a low number can be awkward, if like me you're distributing lots of different attributes among characters. Sometimes, having too few is as bad as too many.

3 games in prgress right now... kind of

Unworldly past (not unwordly... world world world!!!!! not word!)
This game has 2 main characters, Keith ( likes to be called ka´os for honor reasons) and sophie, both of which are from the past.

there is one more character that joins your party for a long time but he doesnt really count.... his name is Tao´zun and he is from the unworldly past.

Grunt Rebbelion:Tobi´s vision

2 main character, Tobi (a grunt with leadership qualities, just what the grunts need.) and Zolap (A grunt with access to much needed materials because of family in the higher ranks) but a few more grunts join your to who are killed of dissapear in the night or run away.

and last but not least, actually yeah least...

Unique worrior´s pilgamige

Not sure, this game is still in the writing out the story phase on chapter one.... which is still a flash back.

my game would have all the 'classes' in my sig as main characters. So that would be 5. And they are all basically equal in importance...
Well, maybe 2 of them are slightly more important but that is not the point :D

Ok, lemme count mine...
Gus, Felix, Andrew, Oli, Ali, Lloyd, Fred, Crazy Captain of Marines, Guy who wants revenge, Ninjy's great great great great Grandson Called: Ninjy version5, I'm gonna have to shove in a female character somewhere in the game so that makes...10! But the first 7 are the main characters, the rest just have side on story lines and they join in the last battle. Gus and Felix are the starting characters, so I guess they are the main main characters, they do most of the funny stuff, Andrew hates Lloyd, Oli is Felix's best friend, Fred is a rampaging gun freak who is friends with Felix, Oli and Lloyd, the marine captain meets Gus and hates him, but Gus likes him, the guy who wants revenge appears halfway throught the game and has no-idea who the rest of the team are, and Ninja v5 wants to find out about his great great great great grandfather and how he became the most famous Ninja Pirate, oh yes, and all of these people want to bring biscuits back to the Ring World.

Eventually I normally end up with 8 but then kill one or two off to focus on other characters.
Normally I start with 2 or 3 and then add one every reasonable chunk of the game. Also I rarely add more than 1 person at any one time after the start of the game.
