Heavily influenced Japanese characters

a griffin that follows the samurai code makes even less sense than that retards idea about a dwarf, possessed by a demon who's host body is a pixie...

wait a minute, that retard is me, no fair

I admit that most of my games had Japanese characters (actually, I had Korean, Japanese, Filipino, American, Portuguese, Germans and few Russians), since my game's about an MMO that suddenly caused mysterious killings, and the game revolves on each involved country.

But here's a twist, some of my Japanese characters can sing Filipino. (Mary Sue-ist?)

Maybe it's because they're using a Japanese RPG Maker, which makes games in the style of JRPG's, that they find Japanese names would be best suited ? Hehe.

Seriously, I know what you mean, Since when did Bob and Yukumura become the dynamic duo ?

I think unless a game is set in Japan or a Japanese-like Fantasy world, people should really stay away from these Japanese names, not that I have anything agaisnt them, but it's kinda strange that most games we see made on this forum and any other forum for that matter, have Japanese characters in an American world... (As in everything seems so western, yet the characters are out of place).

In my game, some of my Japanese characters have mixed bloods, or they've learned lots of Western shits.

Well you forget that most of us are seeing things from the American side. Other countries probably look at us and think we're RAD and AWESOME. Just look at the Ganguro trend in japan. Does bleach yellow hair and dark fake tans sound familiar? Japan is not the only place people get all wiggly and giggly over.

One reason why there are so many Japanese-style characters/themes/etc in most of these RM games is because I've noticed the majority of the developers are between the ages of 10-17 which is also approximately the same demographic of people who watch mainstream anime and play Yu-gi-oh/pokemon cards, so the inspiration to make an anime/Japanese-style game is already there.

I lol'ed... you nailed it. :thumb:

I am not impressed by Anime much... but that is personal preferences.

Bleud: Do you know even Asians are otakus to anime?

I mean like,"WHATISWRONGWITHTHESEPEOPLEHOMYWORDWHYISANIMESOPOPULAR
OHMYGOODNESS" I guess that sums my thoughts up on this topic :)

BwdYeti: Yes teh internetz is a very sad place to live in.

Dung Beetle: No chinese? They are rising you know. ( the population, oh my word....)

One thing I hate is that people think Eastern is all Japanese...

Oh thanks for reminding me about the Chinese. Yep, there are also Chinese characters in my game. And supposedly, my game will span in different "perspectives" of my game's story, codenamed CBT: Korea, CBT: Japan, CBT: Philippines, CBT: China and CBT: America.

One story, different views.

It's funny, I'veread through this entire thread and its seems like throwing a random Japanese character into the mix is the way forward for some people. Personally, I'm trying to stay the hell away from the stereotype and break the mold even a little. The game I'm currently working on has a white main character and a middle-eastern guy for support. To me, even making simple changes like that can make a game more memorable than the factory-standard JRPGs.

Huh? Who gives a shit if someone wants to have a Japanese main protagonist named Kyosuke! Sorry if I'm missing the point, but I'm not exactly sure what the exact problem is here. I mean doesn't anyone else raise an eyebrow at a "conventional wisdom" that says there too many games with Japanese people in them? Should I be waiting for the "Heavily influenced Western characters" thread?

I really don't play games that have Japanese characters because of the IMPPRESION.

If you don't know, typical games usually aren't downloaded as often as games that set them apart.

And people are overusing Jap characters, and I am concerned for that.

Ugh, whatever dude! But I'll still have Japanese characters in my games.

Actually why I don't often make Americans as heroes in my works because in real life, they've been acting like everyone else's Superman in times of real life crises. But behind America's "who saves the world" Superman image, America sometimes call the shots to initiate wars.

Sorry dude, Bush made me Bush-shit against America, that's why I rarely use Americans as my protagonist.

Not all games are based in a non-Earth fantasy setting.

I think it's one thing to be against shallow caricatures of anime characters, which is what I think is trying to be said here. I wouldn't be too fond of that either.

However, I still don't think that means you can't have a character name Namiko in your game if you want to be original. If someone takes a look at "Namiko" and writes a game off, that's their loss. It's a trifling thing to be hung up over.
