The best way to get around when using the RTP is to at least combine tilesets. Using some tilesets in their basic form is acceptable, like Woods01 because pretty much all you need is already there but tilesets like TowerIn could be spiced up with other interior objects. Or you could do what Reives did in QTBV, edit some of the tilesets; recolor them, combine them, etc. I noticed a lot of RTPness that was simply recolored with a brownish effect.
 
graphics matter little. yes, custom is an obvious + but the best graphics in the world won't make up for a crap storyline and character development. where as, if you have a real world with real characters and reasons to go through the game doing what you're doing, rtp is overlooked.
and i prefer rpt over custom graphics that don't 'go' together.
