First sprite, please critique.

I have been coming to this site for quite a while now, but I never bothered to register since I rarely post in forums. Until now, I never really had anything to post about. Anyway, I have been working on a fantasy novel for the past few years and have always entertained the idea of one day putting it into an rpg format. I have done a lot of research on the capabilities of the different rpg makers (95, 2000, 2003, XP, and VX. NOT sphere, game maker, etc.) and decided that XP would suit my purposes best.

I already know that further down the line I will need to seek out additional help on the project, but for now I want to do what I can alone. Since I am taking it from book form and making it into a game, the story and much of the dialog is already available, leaving the creation of the visuals and sounds as my main priority. With this being my first game, I will probably end up making everything much harder than it needs to be.

I do not yet own rmxp, so I figure that I can work on the parts of the game that do not require the system itself to create. In this case, it is the sprites. I will be working on the main characters first. Since there are five of them and not the standard four that I see in most rpgs, I was thinking of going with a tactical battle system with additional allies coming and going throughout the story.

I am brand new to spriting so I figured I would go with a standing (idle) animation first as it seemed to be the simplest.

This is Luna derived from a cat-like race called the Lithen. She is not the main protagonist, but I wanted to make sure that I could properly obtain her look in sprite format so I went with her first, though now it seems a bit counter productive to choose the simplest pose and follow it with the hardest character to sprite. Anyway, I referenced about five different sprites and did so much tweaking that I am not sure if you can still figure out which sprites that I referenced anymore. Even so, do to the size and style, I am sure some of you more experienced spriters can figure it out.

I know there are a lot of flaws and that is why I am posting this. Just do not bash me to heavily. Areas in particular that I am iffy on are the tail animations for the side views and the back view. I think the front view turned out pretty well. All in all, I think I put in ~18 hours on this (Way too long in my opinion, but it is a learning process and it is my first sprite.)

I look forward to any feedback!

It has now been over 72 hours without a single reply. I would like to get some feedback on this before I do the rest of the poses and animations for this and my other characters. I was also debating on redoing it at the RTP height to fit with most tile sets. Though I do plan on making my own tile sets as well in the future. I would be keeping the same skinny structure but with a bit more detail to fit the size increase. Not sure which I want to go with yet, but I would really love it if I could please get some feedback on this and any improvements that I can make. Looking forward to some responses so I can move forward on this.

Well, its small...
Um...
Well it would seem that this sprite is good. Its hard to give a good critique because nothing outstandingly bad or great on this.
The tail in the back look kinda strange but I think you mentioned that.
Umm... The shading on the knees is nice.

Ok, If size is going to be an issue, then here is the same character redone at RTP height with added detail. It is only one frame because it is just to get an idea of how it would look.

Yep, my sentiments are unchanged. Its solid. Nothing really fantastic or bad about it.
Don't take my word for gospel however, I'm awfull at spriting.

It is nicely done but I still wonder at the small aspect. Main post was a bit tl;dr for me, sorry.

Size aside, it is a decent sprite. Maybe you could give her feet some sandals, so she doesn't go on an adventure barefoot. The tail has a sharp curve, make it a bit more round. I'm talking about the point where it starts to go back twards her body.

Sorry for the late reply, I have been busy the past couple days.

If the rtp size still looks too small with this style, I suppose I could try it at half-kaizer size. The only thing that worries me about that is making tile sets for them. I will just have to give it a try and see how it goes.

What does tl;dr mean?

She is not supposed to be wearing shoes due to her race.

I will work on the tail animations a bit more and try to get it to look right. First I will give the half-kaizer size a try and see about posting my progress tomorrow.

Thank you for the replies so far.

Doing it at your original size means that, unless she's intentionally smaller than RTP sized humans, you're going to have to make new tilesets anyway. If you want to skip that step, then you'll probably want her at around RTP size.

Did you make her from scratch? She looks excellent, but if you *are* going to do XP, I suggest using one of the templates to get your sizing down, as she still looks a wee bit small, but that could be because she's not as chibi as the RTP. I think the way that sprite looks in either size would be excellent for all of the characters, but it might look a bit out of place with the RTP tilesets.

Now then, as for the sprite itself, Ithink the tail needs one more pixel down by the bottom (because it looks sharp and pointy with only one), and I think her left elbow needs a bit of work, as it appears that you have a few excess black pixels there (and upon checking, that's not the case, but you need a highlight at the top). And lastly, I think the hair could use a bit brighter highlights.

What? I think the small-sized sprite is perfectly fine. Increasing it to the RTP size made it look worse.

Now, aside from the fact you opened teh post with a massive wall of text, I'd say that it's pretty good, apart from the wide use of black, and there isn't a slight tint of color in the greys. Work on that and it'd be much better.

Though seriously, the smaller sprites have an originality to them.
