Debate Classics: Abortion

Your reason came down to selfishness and self preservation. That's a good enough reason for you?
Your pants are on fire, bud, cus that's what you're accusing people who get an abortion of.

He's saying (I think) that you're saying that people who get abortions do it out of not being to concerned with their own happyness and being too lazy to look after the child. But that your reasons given for not fighting against abortions, through either extreme or moderate methods, are because you are too apathetic and concerned with your own well-being and standing in your community. He's making the point that according to your own beliefs you are guilty of the same sins as mothers getting an abortion, although you by being passive (doing nothing) and they by active decisions (having abortions).

What does logic have to do with your defense? You're guestimating when a human becomes human. This discusssion, as least on your side, has never been about logic, its been about morality.
Why should I head the bark when I know you're not confident enough in your belief to bite?

Out of interest, would you say something like this:
I'm not going to do something off the wall like that, and lose the rest of my life. I'm a great student in school and plan on getting a degree or two once I graduate high school. Going to jail for something that would be little more than the equivalent of a stubbed toe to the situation and losing any chance of a good future I had isn't worth it
To St. Peter?

*stays out of argument and tries to answer original question*
>.> I can't read the original post due to the hack, but i'll assume the question was along the lines of "is it right or not"

Honestly, it depends on the situation. If someone was, say, raped and ended up pregnant, or there was a guarentee that the fetus was going to be horribly deformed or some other complication, than yes, i'd say its alright to abort it. Statistically tho, only 3-6% of all abortions are done as a result of a situation like those. The vast majority are done on healthy, normal women. (That statisic was from a report several years ago, so it might have changed, fyi)

Really, I feel that whether its right or wrong depends entirely on the situation of the woman having the abortion. Just my thoughts.

Also Fenrir, um yeah, your whole religion is grounded in martyrdom. How would you becoming a martyr not make a difference? Everyone has something to lose, you think the only people willing to fight for what they believe in dont have anything? They have just as much as you, possibly more, they just actually BELEIVE in what they're fighting for. Im just saying, sitting around doing nothing cus you're too concerned with yourself while other people do legally what you consider murder on the scale of hundreds of thousands, to me, would be a terrible burden to carry. Im glad I dont believe they're human, if I did and did nothing about it like you Id feel like a huge coward.

Dude, I've already explained that as a single person there would be little I could do and whatever I did would be in vain. Find more material to present, and stop acting like a broken record <.<.

Sorry for going on about it, but you've only given me fairly limp answers. Don't make a difference? That's recycling your rubish doesn't make a difference. It's not about your individual actions; it's about promoting and making acceptable the view as a whole. Don't you think that the first people who wanting abortions had this exact same problem? By simply being a rational person endorsing a view in a community, by talking to people about it, and by arguing your point, you do make a difference. Caught myself out taking a guess at your religion though

I don't really have much more 'material' to produce. I don't actually think I'm going to change your mind. What I came here to say has already been laid out. The information, the possible arguments, have been given. All I can hope is that you'll see or experiance something which will turn it all around, and then maybe everything I've said will suddenly make a whole lot more sense.

Likewise :P. Good debate, and as I've already said, nothing new to say really. I'd hope that readers of the thread can see my points.

I really don't see a problem in Abortion. The mother of the kid should have the choice to do whatever they want with it. Because it's their bodies. Maybe they shouldn't had unprotected sex in the first place, but I don't see why they shouldn't be allowed to do it. Although, I am in favor of Adoption rather then Abortion.

And my point in the sex-ed thread is proven: Protected sex doesn't guarantee someone won't get pregnant.

Frankly, I'm Anti-Abortion, but Pro-Choice. I'd rather people dont get an abortion, but I'm not going to stop someone from making that decision to. Frankly, based on my own experience with this, a lot of teenage girls who seek abortions do it because of the "Oh shit, my parents!" factor and frankly...I don't know, it seems a bit of a weak reason to get one.

Yeah, they shouldn't be intimidated by their parents to do something they don't want to. If they'll accept the consequences of getting an abortion, then let them do whatever they want.

In Portugal, abortion was considered illegal, but a few days ago there was a country pool to decide whether or not change the law. The YES gained by 60%, so, the law will be changed and abortion won't be illegal.

I didn't vote, but if I did, I would vote YES.

Whereas in fact, I'm not pro-abortion, I'm con-abortion. But in same cases it should be permitted by law. One thing that made me laugh, was during the pool, a lot of priests appeared on television saying that they voted NO because they're killing human beings and whatever. Two points: First, the church burned people in the past. Second, they should be more worried about terrorism.

And by the way, the pool was to everyone, but I think only women in age between 18 to 45 should vote, because Men don't abort, and old and young women don't abort too. The decision is on women's hands.

Because a father has no right to an opinion about whether his child lives or dies?

I support therapeutic abortion only.

Therapeutic abortion:
To save the life of the pregnant woman.
To preserve the woman's physical or mental health.
To terminate pregnancy that would result in a child born with a congenital disorder which would be fatal or associated with significant morbidity.
To selectively reduce the number of fetuses to lessen health risks associated with multiple pregnancy.

That is, if your doctor doesn't think you need it, you shouldn't be allowed to have it.

Are you people stupid? Of course abortion should be legal. If you you think it´s consider murder to perform an abortion, think again when you jerk off the next time, jerk off.

Every man should have a say in the whether or not their child-to-be is aborted. No man, or woman, or anyone has the right to have a say in whether someone else's child is aborted.
