Character portraits.

Greetings friends.
If you're reading this, I ask that you please post your opinions on this matter.

For my game, I plan on including a Custom Message System.
In that system, there are going to be character face portraits drawn by me.

Below is the same image digitally colored in 2 different styles.
I would like some opinions on them so that I can decide on which to use for my game.

Thanks :]

Well, the second one is better. By far. (you may not have wanted a commentary about which one is better, but you shall get it nontheless.) Because it is toned better and has no sharp edges. But you need to shade it. I do actually like it (alot) and it reminds me of the emos that hang about in Brisbane City. Good job.

The only thing I would like to see with it is darker hair, shading of course, and being able to see just a bit of his right eye (our left). Looks good, and i hope to see this game finished. Well done.

I second the vote on which claims the 2nd choice as the winner.
To my opinion, it seems to stand out more with quality and detail. Of course, shade is some, and ad the words "JoePolidoro" somewhere hidden in it, and you'll have yourself some high quality work. I like the bandanna, it will look nice hanging over the ledge of your Message Frame =)

As said in nearly every post on this thread thus far, the second one is obviously better. I have only one issue, I hate the whole emo look/fad. Did you draw the second one in flash?

I'd use the second one: it looks alot clearer and more professional. It's a neat drawing, by the way: if all the sets are in that style, you'll have my admiration graphics-wise, at least.

It all depends on what mood you want to go for. The first is more rough and dingey looking, the second is more clean and polished. ...and they both remind me of Johnny The Homicidal Maniac for some reason.

I swear I was thinking the EXACT same thing. HAHA how ironic!

Thanks for the comments you guys :thumb:
I guess I'll go with the right.

Oh god, you have no idea how much I get that.
And that drawing is more of a toned down version of how I usually draw.
:p

I'm not a fan on the whole Emo fad myself but I suppose my hand is. Of couse, he's only really emo in appearance and not in personality.

As for flash, no I didn't draw it in flash.

Both of those pictures are the exact same picture.

The one on the left was scanned while still in pencil and with
all of the stray marks/imperfections.
The one on the right I just inked after I scanned the pencil one, and erased all stray lines for a cleaner look.
(I cut of the bandana on the left one by mistake)

After scanning them, I opened them up in CorelDrawX3 and used the trace feature to trace over the art and I colored it from there.

And as for shading, that is one of my biggest problems art wise. It's difficult for me to shade and create folds in clothing.

If there are any artists who would like to help out, please feel free to PM me, ok?

Anyways, thanks again for the comments and I should be bringing back the Luna Graphics thread with more portraits and stuff.

See ya!

Is that a type of filter? Or do you still have to go over the lines by hand?

It's a feature.
Basically what it does is looks at the picture and traces over all of the lines giving you a nice, clean image.
I suggest you try downloading the product trial from the website if you're interested. The actual product is a bit costly but it's worth it.

I agree with Skitty about the mood thing. But I had a question. Is he supposed to look surprised or shocked? His eye is bugging out O_o. You ma want to relax it a bit if thats not what you're going for...
