Hello and welcome to Pudding’s The Lady Puppet Review
By now you should know that The Lady Puppet demo, a game made by Seele Games, is available free on steam, and is a totally vanilla walking simulator about puppets trying to murder you alive.
Yup, as the game’s chinese translator, I can back up on that.
Now before anyone jumps into conclusion that me being a part of the development would result a biased review, let me inform you that I have already took his money as the translator(and tester) I am well informed of everything in the game. To the point the developer had to send me a non-dying edition because I suck at horror games without dying 100 times.
Don’t try this in game. Alligators are not friendy.
The Story
Without spoiler, you play as Lailah Reah. You woke up in a forest, tied by strings, and your objective is to escape. It’s a simple straightforward plot, but a good one. As you play thru the game, you’ll learn more about the environment, situation and whatever happened of the place.
The controls
Rpgmaker controls can suck a lot, specially with it’s default Z, X arrow keys. But here in this game, not only you can walk diagonally, look!
Oh baby the amount of customization for me to run without pressing the wrong button.
Graphics
Graphics are decent, there are lots of custom graphics and portraits of characters during cutscenes, and hp bar on the UI. The right amount of notifications when damaged. Decent mapping and lighting without forcing you to turn brightness to the max. The only downside is that some cave areas are too similar you’ll feel like you’re running in circles.
Mmmh, tasty shadow and light sources.
Sound
The core of every horror game is its ambience and bgm. And the game aced on its timing on ambience, spooks, and audio. Beware if you’re hearing too much bgm at the sametime….you might have already been found and targeted
Finally, let’s talk about the core. Gameplay!
Like almost every horror game, stealth is the core of the game. One wrong move (run instead of walking) and you’ll be hunted by those darn puppets. But what makes this cute little game unique is being able to ‘summon’ and control(or not) other puppets to be your slaves.
For instance, you’re too fat to walk thru that slim cave? Summon your slim friend, Micki to help you out!
Admit it Lailah, you’re fat.
Or when things get rough, feel free to summon your best friends and let them die for you! It’s the perfect sims simulator!
Last but not least, while the obstacles damages you very very fast, it’s all fair as it doesn’t one-shot you but reduce your hp which allows you to have the right amount of time to react and plan accordingly.
All in all, it’s a well made, detailed and polished horror puzzle game. A game that anyone that wants to play or make a horror game should definitely give this game a go. It doesn’t depend on one-shot death, loud music or jumpscares. But instead the silent, tension and storytelling.
