I used to use Norton; But arc i guess it really varies via the pc. Like you said it destroyed your network because it had an issue detecting various networking protocols and such. I switched after using it on 6 format's because it was just pure evil, every time i used it my PC would crash and it'd do stupid thing's.
IMHO: Norton should still be in Beta
. Every time you install\use its like Beta Testing.
